Contemplative Photography

Seeing With New Eyes

Exercises in Contemplative Photography
Bethany Spring Retreat Center (New Haven, Kentucky)
April 27 – 29, 2012

Thomas Merton described contemplation as a “long, loving look at the real.”

Contemplation is a form of prayer that helps us to see and appreciate life as it is and realize our deep connection and interdependence to all that is.

For most of us, it’s not our modus operandi. We need a practice that will help us to slow down and develop this new way of seeing. The camera is a tool that can be used to cultivate this practice.

The camera is an instrument that helps us learn how to see when we don’t have a camera. ~ Dorothea Lange

During this weekend retreat, we will explore our relationships with ourselves, others, nature, and Source. With the use of our cameras, we will shift our focus from looking at to actually seeing what is right in front of us, in an atmosphere of inquiry and non-judgment.
